Struggle in Life

In a male-centered society, the struggle of a female essence is still in every field, against various aspects, on a daily basis. By the end of the second month of 2020 lockdown, photography artist Kristina Varaksina decided to shave her hair off. From there started a series that reflects on female-related issues: “This series is dedicated to my struggle in life. Struggle to fit in, to meet expectations, struggle to belong, struggle to accept myself, struggles in my relationships with other people, struggle to be a woman in a male-centered society, struggle of being an artist…”

Kristina’s work is a creative response to what’s going on in the world and in her immediate environment. Through visual symbolism, carefully curated colour palettes and painterly lighting she reflects the strongest emotions she and her subjects experience. Kristina gives voice to people from different ethnic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. She sees her job as a photographer to make “ordinary” people more visible and therefore, more valuable. Born in Russia, she lives and works in London.
