Ýrúrarí: One Woman Knitting Show

I Would Not Do Something Like That at Gallery Port (Reykjavík, Iceland)

At one point in her life, the importance of sustainability has started to play an important role in the work of Ýr Jóhannsdóttir, aka Ýrúrarí, a textile designer and artist from Iceland. Through projects like Sweater Sauce, I Would Not Do Something Like That, or Turn A Sweater Into A Friend, she raised questions on our absurd consumption habits of textiles, and tried out new ways of making unwanted clothes last longer as a one of a kind art and design pieces.

Based in Berlin, Germany and Reykjavík, Iceland, Ýr studied textile design at Reykjavík School of Visual Arts and got her BA in textile design from Glasgow School of Art in 2017. Her work has been showcased in art and design spaces in Iceland and New York, US. Her pieces can be found in the collections of Textiel Museum in The Netherlands, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Germany, National museum of Scotland, and Museum of International folk Art in New Mexico. Ýr is also one of four members of the multiart and performance group CGFC.
